Their economies are often heavily reliant on agriculture, lacking both diversification and technological innovation. There are over 40 LDCs, most of which are located in Africa, with others in Asia, as well as in Oceania and the Caribbean.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>

The international community, under the coordination of the United Nations, provides targeted support to help LDCs achieve their development objectives. This includes trade preferences, technical assistance, and development cooperation. In the context of the voluntary carbon market, LDCs can also benefit from global climate action, for example, through the trading of emission credits. These mechanisms offer opportunities for sustainable development and can support long-term progress toward exiting the LDC category.<\/span><\/p><\/div>

What does climate adaptation mean? Climate protection and climate adaptation are closely linked. While we aim to limit global warming to below 2\u00b0C, the impacts of climate change are already being felt: storms, droughts, and floods are hitting us with full force as consequences of human-made climate change. Adaptation refers to taking proactive steps to respond to changing conditions. This is especially important in countries of the Global South, where extreme weather events disproportionately affect people whose living conditions provide them with fewer means of protection. In many cases, infrastructure and economic systems are more fragile, which significantly worsens the impact.<\/p>

One example of climate adaptation is the reforestation of mangroves. Mangrove forests protect coastal areas from storm surges and rising sea levels. Other adaptation measures can include improved water storage, more resilient agricultural systems, and infrastructure designed to withstand extreme weather.<\/p>

To respond effectively to the climate crisis, adaptation needs to be closely linked with development cooperation. Climate finance plays a key role in building long-term resilience. International cooperation and the support of high-quality climate projects help ensure that even the most affected communities receive the resources they need to adapt to new climatic realities.<\/p>

By combining climate protection and climate adaptation, we can not only mitigate the impacts of climate change but also ensure that the global community is better prepared for the challenges ahead. Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are central to the Paris Agreement. They apply equally to industrialised nations and to countries of the Global South. The underlying idea is that self-determined targets are more likely to gain broad acceptance.<\/p>

Each country is obliged to update its NDCs regularly and set ambitious goals to reduce global emissions. NDCs include specific emission reduction targets, strategies for adapting to climate change, and measures to promote sustainable development as well as to support countries particularly affected by climate impacts.<\/p>

Since 2020, countries have been required to revise and strengthen their commitments in line with the \u201cprinciple of progression\u201d. This principle stipulates that each new pledge must be more ambitious than the previous one. In addition, countries must report regularly on progress towards implementation. These reports are then subject to international review.

What are Nature-based Solutions?<\/strong>
These refer to approaches shaped by nature or natural processes. They are found in a variety of projects on the voluntary carbon market. Nature-based solutions can be grouped into three main categories:<\/p>

First, forests:<\/strong><\/p>

From reforestation and avoided deforestation to improved plantation management and more efficient use of firewood, these projects can take many forms. The global potential for carbon storage in forests is estimated at more than 7.5 billion tonnes of CO\u2082. In 2023, the world lost 3.7 million hectares of tropical forest, accounting for roughly six per cent of estimated global carbon dioxide emissions that year.<\/p>

The second area involves improved agricultural practices and methods.<\/strong><\/p>

Climate action projects in this field may enhance soil nutrient management or optimise livestock and grazing systems. This helps capture CO\u2082 while also supporting food security for local communities.<\/p>

The third area concerns wetlands and peatlands.<\/strong><\/p>

Peatlands and marshes are restored, and rivers and coastal areas are rehabilitated. Mangroves, for example, protect coastlines from erosion while also sequestering carbon.<\/p>

Almost all projects are certified according to high-quality standards, which assess and verify their effectiveness.<\/p>

As a holistic approach, nature-based solutions can deliver benefits not only for the climate, but also for biodiversity, and for air and water quality. In doing so, they often contribute to several of the United Nations\u2019 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It is an effective approach \u2013 and a compelling thought: to see nature not only as something that needs protection, but as a partner. The Paris Agreement is an international treaty adopted in December 2015 at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris. With its signing, 195 countries committed to taking action to limit global warming. Unlike the Kyoto Protocol of 1997, which applied only to a handful of industrialised nations, the Paris Agreement involves all countries and is considered its global successor.<\/p>

Three main goals are at the heart of the agreement:<\/p>

  1. Limiting the rise in global average temperature<\/strong>
    The agreement explicitly states that the increase in global temperature should be limited to well below 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels and ideally kept to 1.5 degrees Celsius.<\/li>
  2. Reducing emissions and adapting to climate change<\/strong>
    Signatory states commit to significantly cutting greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, they aim to strengthen resilience to the impacts of climate change.<\/li>
  3. Aligning financial flows with climate goals
    <\/strong>This includes mobilising public and private financial resources, both nationally and internationally. The aim is to support and enhance climate efforts in countries of the Global South.

    The Paris Agreement requires countries to develop and regularly update their national climate action plans. Each new version must reflect higher ambition. Progress is monitored, and results must be transparent and comparable.<\/p>

These costs should be reflected in the product’s price. Tools such as carbon pricing, environmental taxes, and emissions trading schemes can help shift these costs to where they belong.<\/li>
    3. Sustainable production and consumption:<\/strong> Moving away from a throwaway culture toward resource efficiency and circular economy. Products should be designed in a way that allows them to be repaired, reused, recycled, or composted.<\/li><\/ol>

      Innovation and digitalisation are key drivers of this transformation. Combined with clear political frameworks, they help lay the groundwork for meaningful change.<\/p>

      But this process is about more than long-term climate protection. A transformed economy means operating within planetary boundaries, ensuring social equity, and maintaining economic stability. Being open to change makes societies more resilient, whether facing economic shocks, environmental stress, or social disruptions.<\/p>

      In this sense, transformation is not about abandoning prosperity; rather, it is about embracing it.       What Does the Green Claims Directive Regulate?<\/p>

      It\u2019s a familiar situation: standing in front of a supermarket shelf, confronted with products that all claim to be \u201cclimate neutral,\u201d \u201csustainable,\u201d or \u201crecyclable.\u201d For a long time, it was nearly impossible to distinguish between companies genuinely committed to environmental and climate concerns and those merely engaging in green marketing. The terminology was largely unregulated, leaving consumers in the dark.<\/p>

      The EU\u2019s Green Claims Directive aims to address this by establishing clear and transparent standards for environmental claims. Any such claim must specify whether it applies to the entire product, just a component, or only a particular stage of the product\u2019s life cycle. Simply put, there is no claim without proof. Praising one\u2019s efforts for merely meeting legal minimum standards is no longer allowed.<\/p>

      Environmental claims must be precise and supported by substantiation.       What are Scopes?<\/strong>
      There are three categories under which companies or organisations emit greenhouse gases. These are referred to as Scopes and are defined according to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.<\/p>

      Scope 1<\/strong> covers what are known as direct emissions, those that come from sources owned or controlled by the company. This includes emissions from on-site boilers or company vehicles.<\/p>

      Scope 2<\/strong> refers to indirect emissions resulting from the energy used by the organisation, such as electricity, heating, or cooling.<\/p>

      Scope 3<\/strong> encompasses all indirect emissions that occur throughout the value chain, including both upstream and downstream activities. This can involve emissions from suppliers, customers, logistics, the use of sold products, and their disposal at the end of life. Scope 3 emissions are typically the most challenging to measure and account for.<\/p>

      Dividing emissions into these three Scopes allows companies to analyse their carbon footprint in a structured way. Based on that, they can develop strategies to reduce emissions not only within their direct sphere of influence but across the entire value chain.         In short, without biodiversity, no human being could survive.<\/p>

        And yet, each of us can contribute to its protection, starting with our everyday choices. Organic agriculture, for instance, supports soil health and fosters a greater variety of plants and insects. We can also protect and restore habitats directly, whether by planting native species on a balcony to provide shelter and food for insects or by supporting global efforts to conserve forests, grasslands, and wetlands.<\/p>

        Every action, every purchase, every decision is a vote for the kind of future we want to live in.
