Somerset East - Eastern Cape Restoration Project

Project background
The project is located on degraded former pastureland in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa and provides a financial incentive to restore spekboom thickets. Spekboom is a succulent shrub and keystone species native to the Eastern Cape that supports a rich biodiversity, but was largely cleared by agricultural settlers leading to ecosystem degradation.

Effect achieved
Reforestation of approximately 2,390 ha with Spekboom. Securing and creating 170 jobs in 2025.
Co-benefits achieved
As part of the project, 209 people received training in subsistence farming and gained access to demonstration gardens. These measures contributed to improved food security for 1,078 people. In addition, 5,933 people benefited from activities promoting health and well-being. Six people were able to develop their skills through targeted training, while 138 people participated in community-building development days.
