PROJECT EXAMPLE

Cooking stove project, Rwanda

Project background
The ÖkoPLUS cookstove project is located in the Bugesera district in eastern Rwanda. Most households in Rwanda still cook on wood fires. In rural areas, as many as 98% of people are dependent on firewood as a source of energy. The consequences are health problems caused by pollutant-rich smoke indoors and high fuel consumption. As the firewood is extracted from the forest in an uncontrolled manner, this method also leads to severe deforestation.

The cookstove project replaces the carbon-intensive cookstoves with fuel-saving, insulated cookstoves. As the stoves are produced, maintained and repaired locally, the project has also created jobs for the local population.

The specially developed efficient cooking stoves significantly reduce the amount of firewood used. Instead of over 13kg, only 3.5kg of wood are needed per day. In addition to saving wood, the efficient stoves also improve health, as smoke emissions are significantly reduced and people enjoy better indoor air. Health problems caused by smoke, such as respiratory and eye diseases, can thus be avoided. Over 21,000 efficient cookstoves have now been freely distributed or sold for a symbolic price. All stoves are guaranteed for the duration of the project. This means that if they no longer work, they will be repaired or replaced.

Status and duration
Project launch in 2020
Target group
The population of the project region, Rwanda
Effect achieved
Annual estimated savings of 58,000 tons of CO2 equivalent
Co-benefits achieved
SDG 1: The effective cooking stoves save costs and the time needed to collect wood. The period in which income can be generated has increased by 30%. Cookstove production has created additional jobs.
SDG 3: The population benefits from less harmful smoke in their homes. A reduction in respiratory and eye diseases has been observed.
SDG 5:Firewood collection is mostly done by women and girls. Due to the lower fuel requirements of the efficient cooking stoves, they need less time to collect firewood and therefore have more freedom for self-determined activities.
SDG 7: The new stoves provide clean and affordable energy.
SDG 13: The project saves 58,000 tons of CO2 equivalent annually.
SDG 15: The lower fuel requirements of efficient cookstoves protect natural forest resources. A reduction in deforestation has a positive effect on biodiversity. The forest stocks can recover.
