PROJECT EXAMPLE

Ethiopia – Soddo Community Managed Reforestation

Project background
The aim is to protect the heavily degraded forest on the slopes of Mount Damota and to plant new trees, thereby contributing to the long-term regeneration of the region’s ecosystem. The members of the five communities around Mount Damota are directly responsible for implementing the project and have already planted over 48,000 new trees.

The project is not only an outstanding example of local participation, but also achieves numerous positive effects for biodiversity, climate protection and regional development. This project is also one of the first in the world to be certified in accordance with the Gold Standard for land use and forestry projects.

The reforestation area is located in the high mountain region of southern Ethiopia, 300 kilometres southwest of the capital Addis Ababa. The project area covers a total of 503 hectares up to the highlands of Mount Damota in the north of the city of Soddo.

Co-benefits achieved
he project promotes education and training opportunities for locals in the areas of livestock farming, management and agroforestry. The creation of jobs for the local population leads to increased income and an improved livelihood. The infrastructure in the project region is also being expanded through the extension of the road network, the construction of schools and health centres and the development of ecotourism. Numerous ecological co-benefits complement the successes of the project. These include the promotion of biodiversity, species conservation, counteracting climate change and sequestering CO2. The improvement in soil fertility, less flooding and the improved availability of groundwater lead to increased productivity in agriculture.
Local cooperation partners
Local communities developed the reforestation project in Soddo together with the non-governmental organisation World Vision.
