PROJECT EXAMPLE

Poultry Litter Based Power Project in Ranga Reddy District, Andhra Pradesh

Project background
Combating methane emissions and promoting sustainable energy production and resource use on rural farms.

The project activity is a power generation project based on poultry waste in Thakkellapalli village, Yacharam Mandal, Ranga Reddy District of Andhra Pradesh, India.
The project has an installed capacity of 7.5 MW and uses poultry litter, a waste product from local poultry farming which is otherwise disposed of in pits near the poultry farms, resulting in the emission of methane into the atmosphere.
The project also uses other biomass such as rice husks.
Without the project, the fossil fuel thermal power plants which dominate the grid would need to generate an equivalent amount of electricity, resulting in GHG emissions equal to the carbon intensity of the grid fuel mix, and poultry litter would continue to be disposed of in the anaerobic lagoons in the fields, resulting in GHG emissions equal to the carbon intensity of the methane.
