Profile & Contact

More forest – this is what the non-profit organisation PRIMAKLIMA has been working towards for more than 30 years.

Ecological and social added value is at the centre of all projects. As a result, numerous mixed forests have already been created around the world and the atmosphere has been significantly protected from harmful CO2.

Together with the local population, we are creating new habitats for numerous animal and plant species and protecting valuable habitats. We help smallholder families to network in local cooperatives and secure them an income, e.g. for maintaining the forests. The new trees improve the water supply in drought-prone regions during the dry season and protect people and their crops from flooding in the rainy season.

All PRIMAKLIMA compensation projects are certified to the highest international standards.

PROJECT EXAMPLE

Uganda – Renaturalisation of the tropical rainforest

Project background
Kibale National Park in western Uganda is a real biodiversity hotspot. In addition to the largest chimpanzee population in the world, countless other animal and plant species well worth protecting live here. The Uganda marmoset, which is almost exclusively found here in the national park, was also able to expand its territory thanks to the project. An area that had come under extreme pressure due to human influence. Reforestation is necessary to preserve this valuable natural reservoir and convert degraded areas back into large-scale habitats.

In addition to selecting the right tree species, proper care and effective fire protection are among the measures taken to restore the ecosystem. The project therefore offers local people various training and work opportunities in the forestry sector. In addition, new income opportunities are created in ecotourism, among other things. The neighbouring villages are also supported in protecting their valuable harvests from hungry wild animals from the park. Thanks to the high social value for the inhabitants of the region, the project enjoys a very high level of acceptance.

In addition to the mandatory Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) criteria, the project also fulfils the additional Gold Level criterion of ‘exceptional contributions to biodiversity’.
Country/Region
West Uganda, Kabarole district, within the Kibale National Park
Technology
Afforestation, reforestation
Standard
VCS/CCBS
Status and duration
Project launch 1994, crediting period from 2009, duration until 2069
Target group
Local population of the neighbouring villages of the national park
Effect achieved
74,181 tonnes CO2 reduction per year
Co-benefits achieved
The restoration of tropical rainforest and the fight against climate change through the natural CO2 sink effect of the forests are at the centre of the project. The highest quality standards ensure that carbon is sequestered in the forests of the national park in the long term. Degraded and species-poor areas are developing back into a natural and species-rich tropical forest through the planting of native tree species. At the same time, the project creates new prospects for the people in the poverty-affected region. Fair income opportunities contribute directly to poverty reduction and improve livelihoods. The promotion of decent work and sustainable economic growth are essential pillars of the project.
Local cooperation partners
The local forestry experts from the Uganda Wildlife Authority are responsible for implementation on the ground. They work directly with the local population, carry out the planting and monitor the growth of the forests.
