Primo Espresso GmbH: Protecting Soil and the Forest

Primo Espresso is a full-service operator of café bars in companies and institutions. Primo Espresso operates throughout Germany and employs a workforce of over 100. Since 2013, the company has engaged in carbon accounting in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol – in the scope 3 area with the addition of the ‘Corporate Value Chain Accounting and Reporting Standard’.
Primo Espresso is continually working to avoid and reduce emissions. Unavoidable emissions have been fully offset by sustainable forestry management since 2013. In the future, the company wants to become climate positive and achieve negative emissions.

Collaboration With the Alliance

Primo Espresso actively promotes climate neutrality and the promotion of sustainable development among its business contacts. The reaction from companies it has approached in this way has been overwhelmingly positive.

The project

Reforestation in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is not only one of the poorest countries in the world; it also only has 3 per cent of its mature forest remaining. Environmental destruction and the overexploitation of the forests affect the agricultural sector – which offers over 90 per cent of Ethiopia’s population a livelihood – in various ways, including by intensifying soil erosion. The Sodo reforestation project now protects and reforests  the degraded forest on the slopes of Mount Damota. In total, over 1.2 million trees are to be protected or planted. The project is being implemented by the local population and has created over 2,000 jobs. The proceeds flow into local development initiatives such as education, health and climate action projects. The CO2e project also helps conserve over 50 native species of tree – by protecting existing stock and planting new saplings – and consequently restores the habitats for a large number of indigenous animal and plant species.

Offset benefit 2019

In 2019, Primo offset all of its previous year’s greenhouse gas emissions – a total of 1,000 tonnes. When it comes to selecting offsetting projects, the company only chooses projects certified Gold Standard. What’s more, Primo Espresso sets great store by projects that also contribute to sustainable development in the local area – whether social, economic or environmental.

“In the interests of the global common good, sustainability needs to be part of the strategy and goal setting in every company. This is why, for the 5th year in a row, we have offset all emissions that we were unable to avoid or reduce.”
