Partner for development and climate action

Profile & Contact

Global Woods develops and manages climate and biodiversity projects in Paraguay and Argentina within the framework of the Voluntary Carbon Market and under Article 6.4 of the UN and EU Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) Regulation. With its projects in Argentina and Paraguay, Global Woods has done pioneering work – they are considered the first of their kind in these countries to combine sustainable land use with socio-ecological criteria and economic strengthening of the local forestry sector. With the generational change in management in 2024, Global Woods is increasingly focusing on the promotion and protection of local biodiversity and the accompanying development of financing mechanisms.

PROJECT EXAMPLE

Forestal Río Aquidabán

Project background
The Forestal Río Aquidabán project is located in north-east Paraguay, which is known for its high deforestation rate due to the conversion of forest into farmland.
Crop and livestock farming are more profitable for farmers, but reduce carbon sequestration and biodiversity in the area.
Reforestation with paraiso (Melia azedarach) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) stops the spread of degraded grassland, improves soil quality, promotes biodiversity and is expected to sequester over 370,000 tonnes of CO2 by 2045. The project combines reforestation with extensive cattle farming in a silvopastoral agroforestry system and was developed together with the Paraguayan Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MADES). It is operated in cooperation with a local farmer.
Country/Region
Concepción, Paraguay
Technology
Reforestation (ARR)
Standard
ISO 14064-2
Status and duration
Active 1999-2045
Target group
Companies with net-zero targets
Effect achieved
Approximately 6,800 tonnes CO2 binding per year on 301 ha project area, increased biodiversity recorded through biodiversity monitoring, diversification of income of the local project partner through benefit sharing
Co-benefits achieved
By operating a silvopastoral agroforestry system on degraded pastureland, an area of 301 hectares is managed according to the principles of sustainable agriculture and forestry. This enables ecological co-benefits, including improvement of soil health and the water balance, improvement of the microclimate (e.g. protection against wind and soil erosion), increase in biodiversity and increased climate change resistance (e.g. to droughts and extreme weather events). In addition, the reforestation project creates direct jobs, increases productivity and local income levels and contributes to overall economic growth. Together with the provision of foreign direct investment to finance the project activities, the project contributes to reducing inequalities.
Local cooperation partners
Project development together with the Paraguayan Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MADES). The land is operated in cooperation with a local farmer. Biodiversity monitoring is carried out by a local employee.
