Town Hall Debate: Is offsetting doing more harm than good?
We had a nice run. We all wanted to believe that the offsetting could be trusted, that cheap carbon-neutral flights across the globe could be a real thing. Then the Guardian/Die Zeit came out with their shocking report into Verra, the world’s largest carbon certification program, claiming that 90% of their commonly used rainforest credits were practically useless. Verra was quick to defend itself and other players in the industry distanced themselves and claimed that their credits were different. So, is offsetting a helpful part of the journey to decarbonisation, or are we just making ourselves feel better while distroy the planet.
